Zika Virus Common Sense

I. Zika virus overview

Zika virus disease is a self-limiting acute infectious disease caused by Zika virus. It is mainly transmitted by the bite of Aedes aegypti and it is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. As of January 2016, there is evidence of Zika virus transmission in at least 45 countries in Africa, Asia, and the Americas, with the worst outbreak in Brazil.

Epidemiological characteristics

1. Source of infection

Patients, recessive infections, and non-human primates infected with Zika virus are possible sources of the disease.

2. Transmission

Mosquito vector transmission is the main route of transmission of Zika virus. The mosquito vector bites Zika virus infected persons and becomes infected. The virus is then transmitted to other people by biting. And there is the possibility of transmission from person to person.

3, crowd susceptibility

Various groups, including pregnant women, are generally susceptible to Zika virus. People who have been infected with Zika virus may be immune to reinfection.

Clinical manifestations

Clinical symptoms include fever, rash (mostly maculopapular rash), joint pain, muscle pain, and conjunctivitis. After infection with Zika virus, about 80% of people are occult infections, and only 20% of them develop the above clinical symptoms. They usually heal after 2-7 days, and severe cases and deaths are rare.

Zika virus infection can cause nervous and autoimmune system complications in a small number of people. Infection in pregnant women can cause microcephaly in the newborn
